Flour Dusting

Flour Dusting

If a surface dusted with flour is a requirement in so much of baking, perhaps it’s an appropriate metaphor to begin this digital space.

A few themes about this space –

Flour is magic. Baking is love. Before I ever really got into regular cooking, my first love in the kitchen was and is baking. There’s always been something fascinating to me about how mixing things will flour can make so much happen. As a child of the 80s and 90s, the roots of this were boxed cake and brownie packages (and ain’t nothing wrong with that!) but since then I’ve graduated to cookies, breads, and other baked goods from scratch. So you’ll definitely see this in “What’s Cooking?”.

Mostly Vegetarian. I used to be a rather strict vegetarian, but I’ve loosened the boundaries over recent years in light of social situations and food moments (restaurants, communal eating situations, etc.) that I’ve decided are worth experiencing. Your food decisions are your own, so long as you take responsibility for them. I have a firm belief that we should take care of the animals that we eat, rather than a belief that we shouldn’t eat them at all. If more people knew where their meat came from, I have an inkling we would eat a lot less of it and take care of our animals better.

“I can’t count the times that upon telling someone I am vegetarian, he or she responded by pointing out an inconsistency in my lifestyle or trying to find a flaw in an argument I never made. (I have often felt that my vegetarianism matters more to such people than it does to me.)”

The above being said, I still mostly cook and eat vegetarian food whenever possible. Don’t worry, everything will be labeled accordingly.

Remixing the Recipe. Despite being a writer by nature and trade, I’m not really one for recipe writing. I’ll be promoting and supporting recipes and cookbooks that I find, so I hope to share my favorite chefs and home cooks. I have a few old cookbooks I’m exploring, too, so that will be fun to share as well.

Eating my way through LA. As an LA-based writer and foodie, I am lucky to be surrounded by amazing amount of restaurants across all cultures. I do my best to frequent vegetarian/vegan spots since we have so many here (though, really, my favorite places have these options alongside others for my friends). This section is less likely to be bounded by being vegetarian and the space where I’m most likely to deviate from veggie-friendly norms. At the very least if I’m out with friends,  it’ll probably feature photos of food my friends and family might be enjoying that aren’t so animal-friendly. Just fyi!

Ultimately, this place will be the home of my food journey and I hope you’ll enjoy this journey alongside me.
